When you're writing something, you may have to adjust the document's format to fit certain guidelines. From MLA to Chicago style, each has its own rules for paragraph spacing, font size and more.
Sometimes, the default settings on a word processing program, like Google Docs, may not fit these guidelines when you start a new file. And changing them is not always easy to do since the process varies from device to device.
Looking to double space in Google Docs? Here is a how-to guide for the computer, iPhone, iPad and Android.
How to double space in Google Docs
If you're using a computer, open your file on Google Docs. Adjusting line and paragraph spacing on a blank page will format the entire document accordingly. However, if you are working on an existing file and need to change spacing, you will have to highlight the desired sections.
Select "Format" in the top bar and go to "Line & paragraph spacing" in the dropdown menu. This prompts another drop menu with several options. For double spacing, click "Double." If you want to adjust spacing more, you can add a space before or after a paragraph. There is also an option for customized line and paragraph spacing.
You can also keep the lines together and prevent single by selecting those respective options.
If you're on an iPhone, iPad or Android, open the Google Docs app and your file. Then click the pencil icon in the bottom right of the screen to edit.
Select the sections you want to change spacing and click the "A" icon in the top right. This will prompt a popup menu and click "Paragraph." Next to "Line Spacing" will be an up and down arrow. Click the up arrow to change the spacing to double, or 2.00. Customized spacing is not available on these devices.
